Thecha Vadapav arrived in Narayan Peth, nestled in Pune’s old city, and it felt like coming home to tradition. Narayan Peth is famed for its winding lanes, historic wadas (old homes), and of course, legendary food stalls that have been around for generations. We knew opening here meant we had to win over the true purists – the people who’ve grown up on authentic Maharashtrian snacks. And what a grand opening it turned out to be! On launch day, the ambience around our stall was straight out of a Puneri postcard: the aroma of our frying batata vadas mingled perfectly with the fragrance of nearby flower vendors and incense from the temple down the road. Curious elders, who initially approached with a “let’s see what this is about” look, took one bite and nodded in approval. One silver-haired gentleman even declared, “Haach toh khara kolhapuri chav!” (This is the real Kolhapur taste!) upon tasting our spicy thecha. It was the ultimate compliment.
Narayan Peth embraced us by blending the old with the new. We had school kids stopping by with pocket money for an after-school vada pav, standing shoulder to shoulder with office-goers on their lunch breaks, all relishing the same fiery treat. Our team kept the vibe traditional here – from playing Marathi classics on the radio at the stall, to serving each vada pav with a smile and a polite “जय महाराष्ट्र!” (Jai Maharashtra) for the local touch. We also introduced a special combo for this outlet: vada pav paired with a small packet of fried green chillies and sukki chutney (dry garlic chutney) on the side – a nod to how old-school vendors in Narayan Peth serve it. It became an instant hit with the purists! By the end of week one, even the long-established neighbouring snack vendors gave us the friendly Puneri nod of acceptance, acknowledging that there’s a new must-stop food spot in the area. For us, that acceptance – blending into the vibrant food culture of Narayan Peth – was a hallmark of success.
